Ten Gigabit Adelaide continues to make progress with the next 40 buildings now being connected and network partner TPG Telecom announcing up to 70 new local jobs through the construction phase.

Lord Mayor Martin Haese said that with these next 40 buildings being connected to the high-speed, high-performance fibre optic data network, Ten Gigabit Adelaide had now reached an exciting stage in the project’s cycle.

“So much planning has gone into preparing the city for the network over many months, and it is so pleasing to see tangible results,” said the Lord Mayor.

“Recently we have seen physical works commence and 45 buildings and 29 businesses connected to Ten Gigabit Adelaide sooner than we ever thought possible.

“We are now seeing an additional 40 buildings connected and a range of jobs created, which is terrific news for the local economy.”

TPG Telecom’s Group Executive of Corporate, Government and Wholesale Mark Rafferty said there was local contractors working on this rollout and that TPG would employ dozens more people.

“We have engaged a number of local companies to work on the roll out, this will result in up to 70 extra jobs in the local economy during the build phase. We intend to use local South Australian companies wherever possible,” said Mr Rafferty.

Colliers International’s National Director Capital Markets, Craig Shute, said that since Ten Gigabit Adelaide was launched, there has been a considerable increase in activity within the commercial property sector, with six buildings having sold (combined $620m in value), two more under contract ($205m), and an additional one in due diligence.

“With Ten Gigabit Adelaide anticipated to be the fastest and cheapest internet and data solution available in the world, Adelaide really has the opportunity to be a world class smart city and attract a significant share of world class technology companies and start-up businesses,” said Mr Shute.

“The amenity provided in the city together with the Ten Gigabit Adelaide service has already helped attract significant tenants such as Technicolor and BHP.

“There are several other companies currently looking for space which will dramatically reduce the office vacancy sector and increase net effective rents and property values within the CBD and North Adelaide. This is great news for the vibrancy and economic activity within the city.”
