Book Review: The 7 Day Quickie, by Tegan Haining

Former celebrity trainer, Tegan Haining, provides recipes & exercises in an easy, step-by-step 7-day program for anyone needing a boost in health or energy.

Former celebrity personal trainer, Tegan Haining, promises an easy step-by-step 7-day program for anyone needing a boost in health or energy. She succeeds not only in the way she presents the information in this book, but in her encouraging and personable style of writing.

The idea is to provide a one-week program which can then be repeated ‘as is’, or by using the additional exercises, recipes and ideas presented throughout the book. There are a lot of Quick Tips focussing on cooking, shopping suggestions and workout ideas, highlight in boxes at the side of the main text.

Following the preamble, which includes a complete shopping list and meal plan, Haining breaks the book into daily sections, each featuring recipes, simple workout routines and a spotlight on a single aspect of wellness – from sunshine to massage. There is a good use of colour to complement the photos, making the overall design appealing and easier to read.

At just under 200 pages, printed on thickened paper, the handy 17x21cm size (approximately) makes the book lightweight and durable, and easy to fit into a bag for reference while on the go.

To follow the program, Haining has laid out the information sequentially. It couldn’t be simpler. Hit the shops, learn what you’re going to be doing, then turn to Day 1 for the recipes, the workout routine and a wellness tip. At the end of the 7 days, there’s a What’s Next questionnaire to review your progress, followed by ample extra recipes, exercises and daily routines to adopt.

Unlike many other traditional diet and health books, The 7 Day Quickie is not a long-term commitment, nor a complex one. It’s a quick and effective boost to your metabolism and a practical reminder about healthy living which can be picked up and repeated whenever it suits the reader. The recipes range from steaks and salads to sweet potato fries, so those who have strayed far from the path of healthy eating can still survive with the variety of food on the menu.

Starting out or just getting back on track, The 7 Day Quickie is worth your consideration.
