Wirra Wirra Launches New Vintage Flagship Wines And Tasting Tour

Get a taste of the finest wines produced by one of the McLaren Vale’s best wineries while munching on local produce and learning about the wineries rich history.

You know full well by now our love for good wine—so let us (re)introduce you to one of the wineries that fill our hearts with satisfaction.

While Wirra Wirra produces gorgeous wines all year around, at the start of October each year, the winery releases three flagship wines to showcase what they believe to be the best examples of shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, and grenache from a particular season.

This year, Wirra Wirra is also holding a Flagship Wines Tour, where you can get an exclusive insight into the careful crafting that goes into their very special wines. You get to dip into the history behind one of McLaren Vale’s oldest and most revered vineyards, while tasting some of Wirra Wirra’s very best wines, paired with a regional tasting platter from local producers.

Each flagship wine consists of fruit from two to four vineyards that have made the grade in the eyes of Senior Winemaker, Paul Smith, who believes that the sum of the contributing parts makes for a more complete wine.

“The McLaren Vale landscape is so diverse,” says Paul. “There are sub-regions such as Blewitt Springs with their sandy soils that we know provide lovely aromatics, others such as McLaren Flat that bring mid-palate weight and an area such as such as Seaview that offers the structure and fine tannins that carry the wine. For me, each plays their role and that’s what makes putting the final blend together so satisfying.”

The selection process keeps the volume of these wines limited, but that’s just part of the challenge of setting the bar high. It also means looking beyond Wirra Wirra’s own vineyards.

“We are fortunate to work with a group of local growers who understand what we are trying to achieve with these wines,” says Paul. “By looking outside of our own estate, we significantly open up the palette of flavours, textures and character we can bring to each wine. We identify the “right” blocks, working with them from the start of the growing season, through harvest and then into the winery to give the fruit every chance to shine.”
