Windmill Theatre wins prestigious awards

Silver trophyWindmill Theatre won two prestigious awards at last week’s combined Australian Business Arts Foundation (AbaF) and Ruby Awards Night.

The AbaF Visy Arts and Environment Award was presented to the company for its partnership with SA Water in developing creative ways to encourage school students to think about water conservation, from themes linked closely with two Windmill productions.

The company also received a Ruby Award for their four year partnership with the Mimili School in the remote APY lands. During this time, several Windmill artists visited the school for artistic workshops and endeavors and several students travelled to Adelaide to attend events, such as Womadelaide.

Significant outcomes from the partnership also included the production of a short documentary film, Ngura ini Mimili (A Place Called Mimili). Told through the eyes of the children, the film provides a unique insight into life in a remote community.

Ngura ini Mimili premiered at the Little Big Shots Film Festival and was shown at the Australian London Film Festival. The film will also be screened during the London Children’s Film Festival in October 2010 and the REELKids Festival in Canada in 2011.

In accepting the Ruby Award, Windmill Theatre’s General Manager/Executive Producer, Teena Munn, said, “We couldn’t be more thrilled to receive this as a tribute to the wonderful partnership we have shared with the Mimili School – a partnership that has reaped significant rewards for both parties.”

Windmill was the only company to win more than one award on the night and also received a Ruby nomination for Best Work for its 2009 production, The Wizard of Oz.
