Warm Up with Adelaide Hills Winter Reds Weekend

redsIt’s not often you are told to ‘play with fire’ but in late July, wine and food lovers will be encouraged to pull on their woollies and head to the Adelaide Hills to warm themselves by an open flame, a roasting pyre or a crackling blaze – with a glass of red wine of course.

In its fourth year, the 2014 Winter Reds Weekend, on July 26 and 27, will be the largest on record with more than 40 participating wineries offering a diverse range of events across Australia’s most awarded cool climate wine region, right on Adelaide’s back door step.

Adelaide Hills Wine Region CEO, Robin Shaw, said the 2014 event will be “huge”.

“Our wineries have gone all out to organise events that not only show off our superb cool climate red wines but the magical winter wonderland that is the Adelaide Hills in July,” she said.

“We really wanted to put on an event that reminds South Australians that even though it’s rainy and cold outside there are still plenty of warm, cozy and welcoming cellar doors in the Hills that love to open a bottle and light a fire for passing guests.”

Highlights of the weekend include Lobethal Road’s ‘Fire & Spice’ lunches, matching their 2012 Shiraz, which recently won the trophy for best wine at the Royal Sydney Wine Show, to a slow cooked lamb shoulder and a black pepper chicken curry.

Also on the winners list, after being awarded Best Red Wine at the International Cool Climate Wine Show, is Honey Moon Vineyard which will be running a Shiraz masterclass and benchmark tasting (including wines from the Northern Rhone) at the brand new Scott & La Prova Cellar Door in Hahndorf.

For those a little more adventurous the team at Ngeringa will be hosting the ‘Feral Feast’ roasting goat, camel and rabbit in the wood oven to match their winter warming range of red wines.

For those who love a slow cooked shank with a glass of Shiraz, or an osso bucco with a splash of Pinot, the Adelaide Hills is the place to be in the last weekend in July.
