Welcome the newest addition to Whitmore Square – Cafe Outside The Square. Slip under the vine-covered verandah, remnants of the once renowned Iliad Greek restaurant, to find Adelaide’s biggest hearted cafes.

Cafe Outside The Square is a recently launched joint initiative between the St Vincent De Paul Society (Vinnies to us locals) and local businessmen, Tim Seymour-Smith and Mike Chalmers.

The heart comes into the cafe when you discover that it’s purpose is to provide employment and skills to Vinnies’ ‘Companions’ (their disadvantaged patrons) and that all proceeds go to supporting the Vinnies homeless shelter just down the road, while also providing valuable job experience and skills to the disadvantaged, so your coffee is not only guilt-free, but it’s helping people.

Every night Vinnies serve their Companions (the homeless men staying with them) dinner from the cafe’s commercial kitchen, but the once great Iliad was empty during the day, a shell of it’s former self. Not anymore!

The initiative is also central to the upcoming CEO Sleepout being held in Adelaide Oval later this year on the 21st of June, in which cafe co-owner Mike Chalmers is taking part to raise even more money for this important cause. The event will be hosted by Aussie songstress Kate Cerberano.

With the business relationship they share, Vinnies have generously agreed that all moneys donated to Mike Chalmers’ Vinnies CEO Sleepout Campaign this year can be directly offset against their Cafe costs, ultimately benefiting both non-profit organisations, and ensuring every dollar you donate to the cause or spend at the cafe will go to helping Adelaide’s less fortunate residents.

Though the event itself is not until June, the site is accepting donations now, which are fully tax-deductible. Moreover, receiving your donations now (rather than later) will be incredibly helpful to their worthy cause.

Cafe Outside The Square is open 8am to 3pm 7 days a week. We know where we’re going to set up brunch this Saturday morning!
