Every August, in Adelaide and the regions, art lovers revel in the opportunity to view a huge variety of visual art, from experienced and emerging artists during the South Australian Living Artists Festival, AKA SALA.
Once again, the lively little shopping strip on Goodwood Road in the heart of Goodwood has joined in the SALA Festival, with art on display in many locations up and down the Road.
Chairperson of the Business Association Shane Chamings said that they’re well known as an “arty precinct” with Shane himself being the manager of the Goodwood Community Bank, which is hosting an exhibition by Skylight Mental Health.
“To embrace SALA in a collaborative fashion as we’ve done for 7 years now, is really appropriate. Our businesses love being involved, the artists love seeing their work being viewed and visitors enjoy an arty bonus,” says Shane.
“It’s a great reason for locals to make sure they visit some of their favourites on the Road and for those who wish they were locals, to enjoy a Goody SALA stroll and see all that the Road has to offer.”
Gingers Coffee Studio is home to the work of a group of artists – Ginger Lees’s Post Pandemic Collective (because they gingerly explored the idea of a group exhibition for SALA – get it?). Great excitement among the group, with several pieces already sold to an overseas buyer.
“We love to see artists create work especially for SALA in the Heart of Goodwood,” says the road’s SALA coordinator Helen Lewis.
“Judith Crowley has taken that to a whole new level with her exhibition of water colours at Goodwood Dental. Working ‘plen air’ Judith has painted some of the much loved buildings on the Road, including the Op Shop. We also love our very arty little group facing the tramline. Ettie Ink, aka Michelle Fogden, the gorgeous tapestry work of Lottie Emma at Wilderstems, Maya Karamaivis’s pieces at Hoochie Mama Hair Shop and the pottery display and workshops at newcomer to the area Urth Clay Studio make it well worth a stroll ’round the corner.”
As well as art inside hairdressers, cafes, restaurants, health specialists and others, there’s plenty to see from the footpath. Artist Angus Rayer recently completed wall art at Cru Tapas Bar and Kitchen, and Althea Mallee is currently working on a wonderful mural on the front of Foodwood – it’s so beautifully suited to this Indian Restaurant.
A wander past Goodwood Library takes viewers under the sea with SA’s coral reefs and sea creatures created by the Unley Yarnistas and Alli Symons “Indigenous Flock” has landed in the window at A Touch of Beauty.
On a side note the Road’s Heart of Goodwood special offers and savings still apply at various locations on the Road – you can pick up a Hearty card at various locations along the road.
