Torrens University Australia Appoints New Vice Chancellor, Professor Justin Beilby

As Torrens University Australia enters its second year of operations, Professor Justin Beilby has been appointed by the Governing Board of the University as the new Vice Chancellor to drive a major growth phase that includes the continued development and launch of new programs along with national campus expansion.

Professor Beilby, who is the former Executive Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Adelaide, will commence the role of Vice Chancellor at Torrens University Australia from 19 January 2015.

The Chancellor of Torrens University Australia, Michael Mann AM said: “the University is indeed fortunate to be able to attract an academic of the calibre of Professor Beilby as its second Vice Chancellor. I wish to acknowledge the incredible contribution that Professor Fred McDougall made to the University over the past few years as its inaugural Vice Chancellor and the Governing Board wishes him all the best in his retirement.”

Commenting on his appointment as the new Vice Chancellor of Torrens, Professor Beilby said: I look forward to expanding Torrens’ national and international footprint, strengthening the industry connections and further enhancing our student offering for those studying on-campus, online or hybrid.”

With over a decade of experience as Executive Dean, Professor Beilby is a qualified practicing General Practitioner who has been widely recognised as a leader in primary care and general practice reform in Australia for the last twenty years – including leading the academic development of a new Medical and Nursing School in the South Australian Health and Biomedical Precinct over the last two years.

As a member of the Senior Management team of the University of Adelaide, Professor Beilby was involved in managing extensive change within the University. In addition to overseeing all academic, educational and research programs in medicine, dentistry, nursing, health sciences and psychology he was also heavily involved in clinical and policy related research in the areas of workplace planning, primary care financing, chronic illness and the quality use of medicines.

Professor Beilby has broad international experience in establishing educational and research partnerships in the United States, Middle East, China, Japan and South East Asia, and has been appointed to a number of Boards, Working Groups and Committees, including as President of the Medical Deans of Australia and New Zealand (2011-2013), a clinical lead in the development of Health Workforce Australia’s National Training Plan, one of twelve Commissioners for the National Health and Hospital Reform Commission which developed a new model for the Australian healthcare system, and as Independent Chair of the Medical Benefits Scheme Item Restructure Working Group.
