This Is What World Class Food & Design Looks Like In Adelaide

Architects studio gram and restaurant Osteria Oggi have another accolade to their growing list at SA Architecture Awards tonight. Together, they’re like those kids who win everything on sports day.

We’re talking about a restaurant that has been open for less than 12 months. In Adelaide, of all places. But while the team at Osteria Oggi has been focused firmly upon the day-to-day ever since their doors opened in September 2015, the meticulous planning that went into the restaurant, executed by studio-gram, has been reaping countless awards.

The initial brief from owner Simon Kardachi was simple; a bright interior, with the kitchen on show, a direct reaction to the moody, dimly lit spaces of the local hospitality scene.

The praise and admiration of the space has been overwhelming; Gold in the Built Environment category and shortlisted in Hospitality at the 2016 Design Institute of Australia Awards. Shortlisted in the Restaurant Design Australia & Pacific Awards. They are 1 of 7 shortlisted entries at the 2016 Restaurant and Bar Design Awards, and 1 of 11 entries shortlisted in the Restaurant Interior category of the 2016 World Interior News Awards. Both of those last two will be announced in London later this year.

But before those results are determined, they’ve added The Robert Dickson Award for Interior Architecture at the SA Architecture Awards tonight.

As the Award citation says, “Oggi is something special. studio-gram have taken a non-descript tenancy and fashioned an extraordinary interior characterised by a variety of spaces, atmospheres and bespoke elements.”

Design is one thing, but to survive in Adelaide’s increasingly competitive restaurant scene, you need to have more than just a pretty face. The measure is found in the dishes you serve up nightly. Those dishes have so far garnered Gourmet Traveller Critic’s Pick. The Australian called the restaurant “important and not just for Adelaide,” while CNN named them as one of their Best 10 Restaurants in the World in 2016.

In true communal Italian dining fashion, pasta is at the heart of their menu. And they have very good tripe. But that’s only the beginning of the dining experience. And their first ten months may also only be the beginning. Do all dynasty’s begin so auspiciously?
