The Vitals Book, Zine and Crafty Affair

Vinyl RecordsVitalstatistix Theatre Company knows how to put smiles on dials in the depths of winter, and The Vitals Book, Zine and Crafty Affair is an event full of everything one could want on a chilly Sunday. A mountain of second hand books, CDs, DVDs, vinyl records, cool art and craft stalls, a gourmet sausage sizzle, great coffee, cakes and a flowing bar in the beautiful, heritage listed Waterside Workers Hall in Port Adelaide.

The Vitals Book, Zine and Crafty Affair was a great success in 2009, and this year Vitalstatistix has had a huge response to their call for book donations, ensuring that the selection of books will be varied and extremely satisfying for those who enjoy the thrill of the hunt. In fact, Vitals has collected so many books this year that books will be replenished at midday so that the early risers aren’t the only ones who get first dibs on some absolutely spiffing things: from Stephen King to Margaret Atwood, cookery books to encyclopaedias of music, and lets not forget the dozens of magazines, comics, CDs, DVDs and vinyl records (Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison anyone?) up for grabs.

For those who want more than just literary spoils, Vitals ensure a rich array of funky ‘new-school’ art and craft stalls offering nana-chic treasures (made by Adelaide artists) such as handmade jewellery, printed tea towels, notebooks, stencilled badges, aprons, pin-cushions, bamboo textiles, clothes, collectable bric-a-brac, glass and porcelain wares and of course, various baked delights, coffee, a vegetarian-friendly gourmet barbecue and bar for those who enjoy a Sunday tipple.

This year, Vitals will also welcome writer Clementine Ford to the book fair, who’ll be selling personalised haikus. For a small sum, punters will receive a ‘straight-from-the-top-of-her-dome’ haiku on the topic of their choice. Got someone’s birthday coming up and don’t know what to get them? Want to impress a love interest but are poetically challenged? Come on down to the book fair and buy them a haiku.

It’s all for a good cause too, the book fair is Vitalstatistix Theatre Company’s biggest fundraiser of the year and money raised will go towards the development and presentation of new work. So, come for an hour, come for the whole day, bring your mates and lose yourself in the bibliophile’s paradise that is The Vitals Book, Zine and Crafty Affair. Remember – to keep our planet happy, please bring your own bags.
