The Screening Room at the Mercury

MDM_poster_large-200x300Co-presented by the Australian International Documentary Conference (AIDC) and Media Resource Centre (MRC) and supported by The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre at UniSA.

The first Wednesday of every month, we have the remedy to satisfy your documentary needs. Launching in September at the Mercury Cinema, The Screening Room is a stimulating program of some of the world’s best documentaries, providing Adelaide audiences with the rare opportunity to view these outstanding films on the big screen. Each screening will be introduced by a specialist speaker and, following the screening, an audience Q&A will be held with the documentary’s director live via video link.

The Screening Room launches on 1 September at the Mercury Cinema with the multi-award winning and Academy Award nominated documentary, The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers. This fascinating documentary reveals the story of Daniel Ellsberg, a leading Vietnam War strategist who, in 1971, concludes the Vietnam War is based on a decade of lies. His leak of 7000 pages of top-secret documents leads directly to Watergate, President Nixon’s resignation and the end of the Vietnam War. The screening will be introduced by Flinders University journalist and speechwriter Vincent Ciccarello and followed by a live video link Q&A with director Judith Ehrlich.

Next month’s session (6 October) will see the screening of Bananas!*, an examination of the global politics of food. Bananas!* tells the shocking story of a legal case pitting a dozen Nicaraguan banana plantation workers against multinational Dole Food Corporation, whose alleged use of a deadly banned pesticide had possible links to generations of sterilised workers. Bananas!* was the winner of the Audience Award at the FICA Environmental Film Festival in Brazil.

“I encourage anyone who enjoys watching documentaries to make the most of this amazing opportunity to hear from some of the world’s most prolific filmmakers,” says MRC director, Gail Kovatseff.

The Mercury Cinema will screen a limited season of The Most Dangerous Man in America during September, following the launch of The Screening Room.
