The Big Cat Adopt-Out launches this Friday!

RSPCA is heading east for a mega pop-up adoption shop this Friday BIG Cat Adopt-Out event at city-fringe location saves would-be adopters long drive south.

Staff at RSPCA South Australia’s Stepney headquarters are bracing themselves for an invasion from the south – of the furry feline kind.

For three days, beginning this Friday, July 20 and ending Sunday July 22, RSPCA South Australia will host its first ever BIG Cat Adopt-Out from its Stepney offices.

To help 150 felines find loving forever homes, adoption fees will also be temporarily reduced to $29 for adult cats and $99 for kittens.

Staff and volunteers will ferry cats from RSPCA’s Lonsdale shelter, south of Adelaide, to its Stepney offices, on the city’s eastside – bringing adoptable cats closer to their prospective new owners.

RSPCA South Australia’s Head of Animal Operations, Tim Charles, says the first-ever BIG Cat Adopt-Out has required military-like logistical planning. Yet he’s hopeful the team effort by staff and volunteers will pay off.

“We really hope that people living some distance from Lonsdale will take up this rare opportunity to meet cats normally cared for at Lonsdale,” Mr Charles said.

“These cats have ended up with us through no fault of their own, and we know from all the wonderful adoption stories we hear that every one of these animals has the potential to bring enormous joy to someone’s life.

“They just need that special someone to meet them so they can win their heart and be taken into a loving home, and that’s what this event is all about. “It’s a bit like speed-dating – but with a twist!”

The feline migration begins on Thursday, as staff and volunteers move cats into RSPCA’s boardroom-turned-shopfront.

Further space has been allocated for would-be owners to meet animals up close as they decide if they’re a match.

RSPCA South Australia’s animal behaviour and education team will oversee the entire operation to monitor the cats’ welfare and provide advice to would-be adopters about best practise cat-care.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to support the charity’s work by purchasing pet care products on display in the main lobby.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for people to access information about owning a cat and meet some of the hundreds of cats we have been caring for, who now need to become part of someone’s family,” Mr Charles said.
