The Aston Shuffle Heart Adelaide

On Thursday November 10, 'Aston Shufflers' Mikah Freeman and Vance Musgrove hit Rocket Bar ahead of their Won't Get Lost Tour. And they're more than happy to be bringing their europhic electro jams to Adelaide too, as my interview with the duo revealed.

GB: The new single Won't Get Lost has some subtle 80s vibes, what were the influences behind the song?

I wouldn't say we were going for an 80s vibe at all on Won't Get Lost to be honest.  It came from a very summery, warm & optimistic place and that was what we wanted to shine through the most in the song.

GB: The visuals and the storyline for the music video were definitely striking, what inspired that?

The concept of a small-town boy making the journey to the big city is certainly a narrative we resonate with, it kind of mirrors our own situation coming out of Canberra on one level, but also the (long!) journey of finishing Seventeen Past Midnight to a degree as well.  And of course it marries beautifully with the sentiment of the Won't Get Lost.

GB: Did you feel any pressure to make songs that would be as big or infectious as Your Love?

The only pressure we really feel is the pressure we put on ourselves.  We're pretty brutal on ourselves when it comes to the process of writing & producing new stuff and it's mostly our own vision that we're paying attention to really.

GB: Rolling Stone called Your Love 'the best dance single to come out of Australia in a decade', what does that kind of praise and recognition mean to you both?

It means an incredible amount for that song & that album to have been received so well from an institution like Rolling Stone.  We put so much of ourselves out there when we write music, it gives us a lot of faith in ourselves to hear those kinds of comments, although we certainly don't feel worthy of that level of praise.

GB: You've worked with Adelaide duo Lovers Electric on the track Start Again, what was the collaboration process like?

Working with those guys has been amazing, we really feel like we're both on the same page when it comes to music, and that's certainly the foundation of a good collaborative process in our opinion.  Eden from the band also did the vocals on Your Love, and it was an absolute pleasure in both instances.

GB: The electro genre has definitely boomed and hit the mainstream in the last year, would you say that Australia was one of the first countries to spearhead this, with artists like yourself, The Presets, Cut Copy etc.?

Australian audiences certainly "got" dance music as a mainstream sort of entity a little bit earlier than some other parts of the world, and guys like the Presets and Cut Copy definitely laid the foundation for that to happen, but it's also the case that the stuff that is blossoming in the mainstream at the moment is a little bit different to those bands.  That 2007-2008 era when those bands were really hitting their stride was an amazing time for dance music in Australia, but the commercial end of dance music these days is very much a different beast.

GB: What can fans and club-goers alike expect from the new album?

Well we haven't officially declared we've got a new album coming as yet, so we'll be a bit coy on that one if you don't mind! But we are writing new stuff and feeling very enthusiastic.

GB: You seem to perform in Adelaide a lot, are you secretly in love with our city?

Not at all – we're very openly in love!  Adelaide is seriously one of our most favourite places to play in Australia, it has a very special place in our hearts and we cannot wait to be back there again!
