Spanish Film Festival celebrates with Opening & Closing nights

spanish2010Hola Amigos!  Discover the beauty exuberance and sunshine of Spanish language films at Adelaide’s annual SPANISH FILM FESTIVAL.  Each year’s festival presents a diverse and exceptional overview of contemporary Spanish and Latin American film production.  The word “passion” so often comes up when people talk about Spain – and the festival is an opportunity to share Spanish passion on celluloid.  Ole!

The Spanish Film Festival celebrates its 13th year in 2010, screening from May 13-16 at Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas.
This year’s selection of  contemporary Spanish language films from Spain and Latin America features Viva La Musica and All By Women strands, and a tribute to one of world cinema’s hottest filmmaking regions, Colombia.

The Festival will kick off on Thursday May 13 with the highly anticipated THE FRIEND’S ZONE (PAGAFANTAS), a vibrant romantic comedy set among the streets and bars of Bilboa with all the essential ingredients:  endearing main characters, clever dialogue and an entertaining ensemble cast.  The feature will be preceded by THE LADY AND THE REAPER (La Dama Y La Muerte) a 2010 Oscar nominee for the Best Animated Short Film.   The film will be followed by the opening night fiesta with Latin DJs, tapas and drinks.

The closing night Salsa Party features CELIA THE QUEEN, a tribute to the life of Celia Cruz, Cuba’s greatest musical ambassador and the woman who brought salsa to the world. The film will be followed by tapas, drinks and live performance from salsa band Tropico who will serenade with their classic boleros and dancing Latin tunes.

All About Women: a programming first, this section will screen a selection of films directed by Spanish and Latin American women, expanding on the iconic image of the strong, determined, sexy Spanish woman

Viva La Musica: an energetic and exuberant section of the festival celebrates music and dance.

Cine Contemporaneo: a selection of the best in contemporary Spanish cinema from the last year.
