South Australian Ceramic Artists Firing into the Future!

0910-ceramicsvictoriaA group of ten ceramic arts students from the South Australian School of Art (UniSA) will travel to Ballarat at the end of this month to attend the ninth Festival in Ceramics.

Titled Firing into the Future, the three-day festival offers a full program of workshops and presentations and a chance to experience the process and techniques of seven of the world’s leading practicing ceramic artists. Hosted at the University of Ballarat, the conference has steadily established a reputation as one of the country’s foremost ceramic arts forums.

“Firing into the Future will be a fantastic opportunity for all of us to meet with ceramic artists who have established strong national and international profiles,” says Anh-Thu Pham, one of the students who will be travelling to the Festival.  “To learn from them and pick up technical skills, philosophical ideas and develop stronger theoretical background from these artists will help us to begin to resolve our own ideas on how to develop our own art practice.”

The conference will also give the students the chance to participate in discussions with other attending artists and establish relationships with emerging artists, suppliers and peers from the ceramic arts community.

The students travelling to the Festival include Abbi Sulda, Anh-Thu Pham, Briony Milverton, Ebony Heidenreich, George David Zacharoyannis, Michael Carney, Lucy Palmer, Nina Frigault, Sally Gibson-Dore and Sophia Nuske.

The Festival in Ceramics is a biennial event organised by Ceramics Victoria, providing a forum for interested collectors, students and practioners to come together to exchange ideas. This year’s festival line up includes ceramicists Paul Aburrow, Julie Bartholomew, James Cattell. Maria Coyle, Janet De Boos, Merran Essen and Avital Sheffer.

This professional development tour to the Festival in Ceramics – which runs from September 18th through to September 20th – has been supported by the Helpmann Academy.

The Helpmann Academy for the Visual & Performing Arts assists emerging artists to make the leap into professional practice, by providing a range of programs and opportunities including exhibitions, awards, grants, mentorships and international exchanges. The Academy’s partners are TafeSA – the Adelaide College of the Arts and Vizarts O’Halloran Hill; University of South Australia – South Australian School of Art; University of Adelaide – Elder Conservatorium; Flinders University – Flinders Drama & Flinders Screen Production; Adelaide Central School of Art.
