Season’s First Cherries Help Children Living with Cancer

It is hoped hundreds of thousands of dollars will be raised for Camp Quality SA, the children’s family cancer charity, when the fruit and vegetable industry of Pooraka auction a number of items including a case of cherries at the charity’s annual Cherry Ball this Saturday night.

In keeping with the 10 year tradition, a local cherry grower will donate the season’s first fruit and then the 650 retailers, growers and producers will bid among themselves to buy it back, sending the proceeds to Camp Quality’s SA branch.

Last year the cherries sold for a record-breaking $50,000. As well as the title produce, a limited edition signed Casey Stoner helmet and jacket, a trip for 10 to Bali, Cadell Evans and Lance Armstrong signed memorabilia and Clipsal 500 tickets will also be on auction, hoped to bring the grand total to around $250,000 for the charity.

“The Cherry Ball is the highlight of the Camp Quality fundraising calendar. The generosity of the Adelaide Produce Markets plays a significant role in providing fun therapy for children living with cancer,” Camp Quality SA & NT Area Manager, Heather Berry, says.

“The proceeds enable us to run week long camps for children and teenagers living with cancer, weekend camps to enjoy with their siblings and parents, and activity days for the whole family.”

Crowned Cherry King or Cherry Queen, the successful bidder will join Cherry Ball Prince and Princess, Camp Quality campers, William Allen 7 and Elsa Klinge 8 in giving out the cherries to children being treated for cancer at the Women’s and Children’s hospital.

“Laughter truly is the best medicine and we are glad to be able to help Camp Quality provide fun therapy to all the children and their families living with cancer,” Says Derrick and Frank from the Adelaide Produce Markets Pooraka.

The Cherry Ball will be hosted by Jason ‘Snowy’ Carter and attended by Mayor of Salisbury, Gillian Aldridge.

Entertainment will include local singer Jessica Gosti, musical trio The Rubys, and aptly named band, Winter Cherry.

The Camp Quality Cherry Ball will take place on Saturday 26th November at The Adelaide Convention Centre.

The Cherry King or Queen and Prince and Princess will hand out the cherries in Brookman Ward, Women’s and Children’s Hospital, on Tuesday 29th November.
