SA Restaurant Tops Out Gourmet Traveller’s Best For 2018!

Adelaide restaurant shows the rest of Australia what we’ve always known: South Australia has the best food and the best chefs!

Gourmet Traveller recently released their highly anticipated Top 100 list of the best restaurants in Australia, and South Aussies have cause to celebrate! We normally get edged out of the top spots by those fancy schmancy operations in Sydney and Melbourne, but this year we get to thumb our noses at the east coast because Jock Zonfrillo’s amazing Rundle St. Restaurant Orana has taken the number one billing! Also featuring prominently is the wonderful Penfolds Magill Estate restaurant, coming in at an impressive #13. In other categories, d’Arenberg Wines took out the best McLaren Vale cellar door with their impressive list of quaffs and amazing new cube! Adelaide Hills’ winery The Lane also won best in their region. Glam would like to congratulate all of South Australia’s winners on their remarkable efforts. On ya, guys!

This is a huge deal, as it’s the first time a South Aussie restaurant has taken the #1 spot in the prestigious guide, which is functionally Australia’s Michelin Guide. Much like its European counterpart, the national foodie publication also awards a star rating to restaurants, and Orana received an outstanding three stars in Gourmet Traveller’s 2018 Restaurant Guide Awards. (Much like Michelin, three stars is the highest accolade a chef and their restaurant can receive, attained by only a very select group of amazing dining destinations.)

Owner/chef Jock Zonfrillo was obsessed with finding a new definition of Australian cuisine, and to that end, trekked out to indigenous communities, national reserves and farms to develop Orana’s utterly unique approach to Australian cuisine. Heavily focused on native ingredients and local produce, Orana could be said to the fanciest ‘bush tucker’ you’ll ever eat! Head here to read more about why GT reckons Orana deserves that top spot!

I was fortunate enough once to score an invite from my family to join them for lunch in the sparse yet elegant upstairs dining room off Rundle, and I can’t recommend it enough to anyone with the interest (and the means!) in fine Australian cuisine. Orana is an unforgettable dining experience that truly deserves to be called the best restaurant in Australia!

Restaurant Orana is open Wednesdays to Saturdays for set degustation lunches and dinners. If you’re (obviously) interested in tasting Australia’s best food, you can reserve one of the few tables on their website, or give them a call during their open hours on 8232 3444.
