Redbacks Victorious Over Warriors

The West End Redbacks have secured top spot in the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash after a batting barrage helped them record a 46-run victory over the Retravision Warriors at the WACA.

Brilliant knocks from Dan Harris (70 off 37 balls) and Kieron Pollard (55 off 26) helped the Redbacks post 8/202, with the Warriors only able to manage 9/156 as the visitors claimed their second consecutive win in a row.

Winning the toss and deciding to bat, Redbacks’ openers Michael Klinger and Daniel Harris made a sensational start, combining for a 98-run partnership.

Harris was given a life on 11 after Luke Ronchi missed an early stumping and the Redback opener made the Warriors pay, with back-to-back boundaries to push the visitors’ total to 0/27 after just three overs.

The Redbacks opening pair raced to a 50-run partnership off just 28 balls and there looked to be no sign of stopping for the home side, with the pair continuing the onslaught.

As the run rate continued to soar over 10 runs an over, Harris compiled his 50 off just 25 balls with seven boundaries and two sixes in his knock.

Harris had another life as Matt Johnston dropped a catch that resulted in another six for Harris and it took until the 10th over before the Warriors broke through, dismissing Klinger for 35.

With Pollard arriving at the crease, it was Harris that produced the fireworks as he continued to pepper the boundary rope as the Redbacks reached 1/109 at the halfway mark.

Harris was eventually out for 70 in the 12th over with his 37-ball knock including nine four’s and three sixes.

Incoming batsman Callum Ferguson lasted only one ball after he was forced to retire hurt, breaking his nose when a Sajid Mahmood delivery struck him in the helmet.

It proved to be a big over for the Redbacks with 23 runs coming off the over, with Pollard blasting three sixes.

The West Indian continued to score through boundaries and bettered Harris’ earlier efforts blasting his half century off just 22 deliveries.

Pollard was out the next over for 55, caught at long off as he and Dan Christian (21) combined for a 75-run partnership to push the total to 3/190 in the 18th over.

The Redbacks lost late wickets as they searched for quick runs but finished 8-202 at the end of their innings.

Chasing 203, the Redbacks made a strategic move bringing on Redback youngster, Nathan Lyon.

The move paid off with the spinner removing the dangerous Chris Gayle for six after the West Indian was stumped by Graham Manou on just the second ball of the Warrior innings.

The Warriors lost their second wicket with the score on 44 as Harris continued his great day at the WACA, running out Adam Voges for 14.

Shaun Marsh was looking dangerous but on 24, was forced to go after Klinger produced a sensational diving catch to dismiss the opener, reducing the Warriors to 3/55 midway through the eighth over.

Warriors’ captain, Marcus North was dropped by Harris on 31 but the next over the Redback was able to redeem himself, removing Tom Beaton the next over as the Warriors fell to 4/102.

Needing 98 runs off the final six overs, North was well deceived by Nathan Lyon (2/45 off four overs) as the Warriors captain was bowled for 48, leaving his side at 5/122.

Harris could not keep himself out of the match, claiming his second wicket with a fantastic yorker to bowl Matt Johnston.

Pollard cleaned up the tail with two late wickets as the Warriors run chase was always difficult with the run rate over 10 runs an over for their entire innings.
