As Darren Middleton is best known as the lead guitarist and songwriter from the much-worshipped Powderfinger, it’s somewhat fitting that Darren’s ‘One Thing’ tour will see him performing in Adelaide at the Church of the Trinity, at Clarence Park this Friday as part of the Trinity Sessions.

However, for those hoping to worship at the rock alter take note: appropriate for the venue, Darren will be playing a stripped bare acoustic set accompanied by Melbourne musician Kelly Lane on violin and keyboard.

The set will highlight tracks from Darren’s critically acclaimed debut solo LP ‘Translations’ highlighted by the majestic ‘One Thing’ that, in the opinion of this writer, ranks among the finest songs of his career.

For those wanting to hear Powderfinger tunes, Darren promises to perform a few numbers from his storied back catalogue.

Darren explains, “It took me a while to get my head around the idea of playing some of these old (Powderfinger) songs, but then, once I started… I realised they are songs that I had a good hand in… it makes sense to respectfully play some!”

For a band whose music has been a rites of passage for Australian rock music fans for three decades, a church is a fitting venue. Friday’s show marks the first time Darren has performed in a church.

Darren offers, “It is (the first time) and I am incredibly excited. The song list and way I’m performing, really lends itself to the ambience of a church… I’m trying to control my enthusiasm, but it’s hard.”

Darren’s also been branching out into some on-screen presenting. His last visit to South Australia was spent in the Barossa recording segments. His passion for wine means he’ll be arriving in Adelaide early on Friday.

“I have planned to arrive extra early into Adelaide… for one reason… wine and the Barossa region. I have been given a hot tip to scoot to Penfolds and that’s what I plan to do.”

When not touring ‘The One Thing’, Darren has also been increasingly working composing for film and television.

Darren elaborates, “I’ve started a production company with a composer friend called Sonaire. We recently scored 13 episodes for a new ABC series and will begin work on a documentary soon. It’s a great way to write music… having the narrative in front of you and just supporting the emotive mood…. great fun.”

The remainder of 2014 is loaded with overseas trips for Darren so it’s certainly exciting times ahead!

“A trip to Brazil to play at the World Cup soccer… An Australian tour with Busby Marou… maybe a quick trip to the UK to play some gigs… 2014 is a busy year for me… after that? Who knows…” he teases.

Meanwhile, a collaboration with Ken Stringfellow (The Posies, R.E.M., Big Star) is also on the cards.

Darren hints, “I sure hope so… I’ve been a fan of Ken’s work for years and had the chance to chat for a while with him after his recent Melbourne show. He and I share a similar sense of melody and music… fingers crossed we will do something together!”

As Darren doesn’t have any immediate plans to return to Adelaide, this Friday’s show is a must-see gig for Powderfinger and live music fans.
