Planning Approval for Affordable Housing Project

The Development Assessment Commission has granted Adelaide City Council planning approval for the first stage of the Sturt Street Affordable Housing Project. 

Consisting of 73 affordable residential apartments across three five storey towers, it will also include 232 square metres of commercial space on the corner of Wright and Frew Streets.

This follows Council’s approval, as co-owner of the land, in September 2011 of a design concept for the entire project that was submitted by Hindmarsh Property Pty Ltd.

Development Approval is still required for the rest of the project which includes an additional 106 apartments, underground car parking plus commercial floor space fronting Sturt Street, creating a mixed use development. Safe and attractive pedestrian links and a piazza have been incorporated into the design.

Of the 179 apartments, 73 will provide affordable housing options, including 20 apartments to be retained by Council and rented out through the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS).

“This project will increase the residential population, housing choice and social mix, and make it possible for more people to enjoy city life,” Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said.

“Few people appreciate Council is also a developer – we are keen to see housing in the city and we’re investing significantly in city development to get these outcomes.

“Increasing the number and blend of people living in the city centre will generate activity and vitality. The central location gives residents easy access to public transport, the Central Market and restaurants of Gouger Street, as well as many other attractions in the area,” Stephen said.
