Pirates to Invade Port Adelaide

Members of the Port Adelaide Enfield Chamber of Commerce have taken matters into their own hands and are inviting pirates frompirates day near and far, young and old, scurvy and scarred to invade Port Adelaide in celebration of International Talk Like a Pirate Day. The 3-day Piratisation of Port Adelaide – 19th, 20th & 21st September – aims to capture the imagination of all ages and invites all South Aussies to get involved in the ocean of possibilities for fun and in Port Adelaide.

Chamber President, Cath Duncan says “International Talk Like a Pirate Day is held around the world each year on September 19 and Port Adelaide is now listed on the International Pirate Map.”

Organisers are grateful for the support of Flinders Ports for letting the pirates into (and hopefully out of) the Port River. Flinders Ports takes pride in supporting the local communities at each of its ports. Around Port Adelaide, Flinders Ports is also a proud sponsor of the South Australian Maritime Museum, as well as several amateur sports clubs and a range of cultural, community and sporting events.

The 3-day Piratisation of Port Adelaide features tours of South Australia’s Tall Ships, The One and All and the Falie. The Wild at Hart Market Pirates will be selling their loot Saturday and Sunday and X marks the Spot at The Port Mall for a Pirate dress-up competition, market stalls and free balloons. The Visitor Information Centre face-painter will be turning innocent children into scary pirates so that they can head off, in character, to pillage and plunder using the Official Treasure Hunt Map. Lucky scurvy pirates, mermaids or wenches can win an array of prizes including an iPad Mini and a day sail for 2 on the One and All.

“There is so much to see and do in Port Adelaide that families simply can’t fit it all in over one day. It’s true too that much of the Port’s treasure is hidden, like our little stables in Calton St, and must be discovered,” says Jackalope Gallery owner Nancy Forrester, “and we are one of over 60 businesses involved in the weekend’s activities.”

Pirates are welcome in The Port after dark, too. On Friday night A Talk Like a Pirate street pAARty on St Vincent St featuring exhibitions, buskers, food and the Forge bar is a must do. Over the 3-day weekend the British Hotel where oysters and rum are on the menu, welcomes all pirates and wenches to support U.G.L.Y bartenders raise funds for the Leukemia Foundation. Watch out for the Ghost tours, pub crawls and scoundrels on the streets!

The Jolly Rogers will be flying high and the Port made shipshape for the onslaught. Avast and Ahoy Me Hearties, The Pirates of Port Adelaide will welcome ye!
