Nobody But The Divine Alison Moyet- The ‘Other’ Tour

Alison Moyet

Updated with pics:

After an absence of 30 years or so, Alison Moyet finally returned to Adelaide in a brilliantly performed celebration of her 35-year career in music. She’s sold over 23 million albums and was once the front for the 80’s synthpop due Yazoo, although has done very well for herself as a solo artist in the years since.

She’s somewhat of a fashion icon of sorts, a chameleon who has changed styles over the years yet remains a true darling when it comes to her personality. (Read our interview from a few weeks back here.) https://glamadelaide.com.au/interview-alison-moyet/

This tour is not only to promote her latest album ‘Other’, but is also a culmination of her life’s work, and showcases that amazing signature voice of hers.

Her opening act was Steve Balbi (ex Noiseworks, Electric Hippies) who was engaging and exceptional in his own right, paying tribute to the late Tom Petty with a stripped back cover of ‘Learning To Fly’ that was beautifully done. Balbi gave a very candid and honest performance, inviting the audience in and really connecting with them. His version of the Noiseworks hit ‘Reach Out’ took on a whole new meaning.

Alison Moyet opened with a spoken word piece from Moyet herself, set to transcendental electronic music setting the scene for the performance and introductory song ‘I Germinate’ from Other. As expected, Moyet delivered her more well known hits throughout the night, including ‘Only You’, ‘All Cried Out’, ‘Don’t Go’, ‘Is This Love?’ and ‘Love Resurrection’, alongside music from her new album ‘Other’. It was mostly a return to her electronica roots and she generously interacted with the adoring fans who came to enjoy her along with her Musical Director John Garden, and synth payer Sean McGhee (who were also fantastic!)

She was genuinely happy to be here in Australia and constantly showed appreciation throughout the performance. Of course, the crowd reciprocated tenfold.

The single ‘The Rarest Birds’ from ‘Other’, as I stated in our previous interview, is a triumphant statement that asserts Alison Moyet’s status as a music great. It is about her experience in her community of Brighton U.K, which is known for its diverse and eclectic community, and is both musically and lyrically beautiful, perhaps Moyet’s apogee as an artist.

In true Moyet fashion, she did things her way and chose the what and how of the songs chosen, avoiding ‘Invisible’, (which she refuses to sing anymore -read our linked interview for her reason why) but nonetheless, the inimitable voice of Alison Moyet is absolutely divine, and I must add that she looks fabulous at 56!

This wasn’t just a nostalgic trip back to the 80’s/90’s, but was also a biopic of one woman’s amazing contribution to the music world. A real Love Resurrection. A truly class act!
