New York Met Opera’s La Fanciulla Del West

Puccini’s wild-west opera had its world premiere in 1910 at the Met, where it received a magnificent reception and reputedly had 55 curtain calls..

On a visit to America in 1907 Giacomo Puccini attended a Broadway play by American playwright David Belasco title The Girl Of The Golden West.   Thus began the genesis of the most celebrated “horse opera” LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST (the nickname stuck because of the five horses which appear on stage).

Now, on the occasion of its centennial, all-American diva Deborah Voigt gives a riveting and moving portrayal of Minnie, the owen of the Polka Saloon.  Tenor Marcello Giordani plays her love interest Dick Johnson.

Nicola Luisotti, music director of the San Francisco Opera, conducts Puccini’s adventurous score.
