As the luck of the dice would have it, it’s International Board Game Day this Saturday 11th April and Hungry Hippo Board Game Café are opening their doors to bring some tough competition to the West End.

Situated in the former Porkey’s, or even more formerly, BBQ Inn, this Renew Adelaide project will be serving up over 250 board games, cheap, and ridiculously cheerful, menu items like ‘Dip’lomacy (trio of dips), The Soup Yahtzee (soup of the day), Arancini Frontiers, Burgers & BattleChips (yep, you guessed it) and local wine, beer and ciders.

Katrina & Brendan Levi have left their jobs to bring this new board game café concept to Adelaide. “We love the idea of providing a space right near UniSA in the West End that can help bring the community together,” says Brendan. “You could come with a friend and end up sitting across a board game with 2 other people you’ve never met – that’s what we hope will happen!”

Fancy hitting your friends over the head with a bommy-knocker? Brendan’s favourite game is Ugg-tect, a game for caveman architects. “We always know it will have people in fits of laughter – as you try to communicate to your team how to build a house out of blocks using grunts and sign language.” Games range in length from 5 minutes to 8 hours, from familiar childhood favourites to new games they will guide you through, so there is definitely something for everyone.

Renew Adelaide has secured this space on a 30 day rent-free rolling lease thanks to University of SA whilst the property awaits future redevelopment. It continues to build on the work of Renew Adelaide in helping to revitalise and activate the West End.

Hungry Hippo is open Wednesday to Saturday 4pm til late. Stay in touch on their Facebook for regular board game tournaments and special themed nights.
