Special free event at Morphettville Racecourse to commemorate the raising of South Australia’s first contingent of troops for the Great War.

640px-Light_horse_walersThis Saturday 13 September 2014, the South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC) invites patrons to Morphettville Racecourse to enjoy a special free event to commemorate the raising of South Australia’s First Contingent of troops for the Great War. This event will be the curtain raiser for next year’s ANZAC Centenary in South Australia.

A 1914 first Australian Imperial Force (AIF) training camp will be recreated at Morphettville to prepare a body of troops for a ceremony at Glenelg the following day. Re-Enact SA, along with other living history groups will take part in the re-creation which will allow patrons to witness exactly how the troops trained 100 years ago.

The event aims to remind South Australians that although 100 years may separate us from the Australian soldiers, sailors, nurses and other personnel who served in the Great War, they are not as distant as they may seem.

The Centenary of the raising of the First Contingent can be a time to remember both the service and sacrifice of Australians throughout the First World War and conflicts since, and those who have given their loved ones to Australia’s cause in time of war.

On Sunday 14 September, the parade will form on the grass verge on the South Western corner of Morphett Rd and Anzac Hwy where the combined force of light horse, infantry and other parties will march at 10am to Moseley Square, Glenelg for a public commemoration.

When: Saturday 13 September 2014, gates open at 10.30am and the display will be open until 5.30pm
Where: Morphettville Racecourse – Morphett Road, Morphettville SA
Admission: FREE ENTRY and also includes an afternoon of live racing to enjoy
