MINI British Film Festival Opens Tonight

Still from Colette

MINI British Film Festival 2018 opens this Wednesday night.

Cinema lovers may be mourning the end of the Adelaide Film Festival: but be not sorrowful! The MINI British Film Festival 2018 is all set to launch on 24th October at Palace Nova Cinemas.

Don’t be fooled by the title “Mini”: this refers to their major sponsor, not to the size of the offerings, with the 2018 festival the biggest yet.

Opening night this Wednesday sees the premiere of the biopic Colette, about the enigmatic French author. The divine Keria Knightley stars in what Variety referred to as “one of the great roles for which [she] will be remembered.” Tickets to the premiere include a pre-show reception with drinks and live entertainment.

Feature highlights include the emerging cult classic zombie musical Anna and the Apocalypse; a  retelling of Hamlet through the female gaze in Ophelia; Mike Leigh’s powerful historic drama, Peterloo,  about the hugely defining Peterloo massacre of 1819; Carl Hunter’s Sometimes, Always, Never, which stars Bill Nighy; and the charming comedy Swimming With Men, about a male synchronized swimming team, starring Rob Brydon.

In the very popular retrospective section this year sees a tribute to Michael Caine and the swinging sixties, with such films as Georgy Girl, Alfie, The Italian Job and To Sir With Love.

Caine also features in one of the two documentaries, narrating My Generation, which looks at the cultural change wrought by London in the 60s. The other documentary screening is Spitfire, narrated by Charles Dance and interviews with Spitfire pilots.

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of Operation Chastise during WW II, there will be a special screening of the award-winning classic The Dam Busters. This will take place on November 8th at 6.15.

Closing night sees the Australian Premiere of the incredible biopic Stan & Ollie, about the great double-act, Laurel and Hardy. This stars Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly. The screening on November 14th includes a glass of wine on arrival and the chance to win a pair of state-of-the-art Bowers & Wilkins PX headphones.

The Festival runs from 24th October to 14th November at  Palace Nova Eastend and Prospect.  Prospect will also be hosting a series of classic British children’s films such as Peter Pan, Paddington and Mary Poppins.
