It’s that time of year again where we’ll be kicking back to relax and enjoy our public holiday with a few bevvies, a bit of sunshine and a good old fashion barbie to celebrate all things Aussie. There are events happening from morning until midnight. That’s plenty of time to head to the Australia Day formalities and kick off the festivities by the beach, the poolside or in the city.
Australia Day Luncheon – While 20th January is before Australia Day, the Luncheon is set to kick off Australia Day activities with an enjoyable lunch and a range of speakers including Former Prime Minister of Australia The Hon Julia Gillard, Maggie Beer and His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC. Tickets can be purchased for $150 or $1430 for a table of ten.
Australia Day at Auchendarroch – The Australia Day formalities start at 10 am followed by a family fun day with a true Aussie style sausage sizzle, face painting, mini golf, Old MacDonalds Farm, airbrush tattoos, a bouncy castle, pony rides and a free circus workshop at 11:30 am.
Australia Day at Hazelwood Park – Starting at 8:45 am, the Australia Day awards and Citizenship ceremony will take place followed by a barbie brunch and musical entertainment from the Burnside Symphony Orchestra and the Adelaide Harmony Choir.
Australia Day Bush Fair and Fireworks – With a gold coin entry celebrate Australia Day with live music, wood chopping, pony rides, rock climbing, face painting, games, native animals, mini train rides, stalls and much more. TV and radio personality Cosi will be MC’ing the day as the fam watches roving children’s acts, live music and Aussie displays. Pack a picnic and be ready to explore before the spectacular fireworks display (which is synchronised to music might we add) finishes the night.
Australia Day in the City – The event begins with one of the largest Australia Day Parade’s in the country from 6:00pm, featuring more than 4000 people celebrating what they love about Australia and being Australian. The Parade includes over a 150 community groups, vintage cars, horses, marching bands, a giant echidna, floats, giant characters and includes a fly past by an F-18 Hornet. Following the Parade a huge free family Concert will commence just after 7:00pm. The event concludes with the spectacular Australia Day Fireworks finale!
Australia Day Show – the Club has a FREE show from 3 pm to 1 am featuring the bands The Wild Ones and Silverados.
Civic Park AusDay – Oh boy, Oh boy! There’s going to be a GIANT 100m long dual slip-and-slide as well as a new slide for the lil’ ones, jumping castles, prizes, food and so much more. Head down to Civic Park for beautiful surrounds and awesome entertainment for this FREE event.
Gemtree Wines – Bring along a picnic rug, enjoy wine, beer and cider and grab a bite from Forage Supply Co while listening to the live stream of Triple J’s Hottest 100 countdown from Gemtree Wine’s Wetlands Eco-Trail. Tickets are $10.
Haçienda – Synagogue place is shutting down for one big street party on the eve of Australia Day. There will be DJs, dancing, cocktails and food. Fancy Burger will be popping up for the party with a special Aussie Day menu featuring lamb on the spit, barbeque sausages, lamb chops and prawns and speciality burgers. Get in before 8 pm for free entry otherwise, it’s $10.
Hains & Co – All aboard for a day of celebration with a bounty of fine bevvies on tap including Hills Hopped Cider, Mismatch Session Ale, Mismatch Extra Pale Ale and Mismatch Pomme Sour. Not only are you celebrating Australia Day, but also The Hills Cider Company’s 7th Birthday. There will be front yard cricket, lamb on the barbie and Triple J’s Hottest 100.
Hotel Royal – The Front will have drink specials, raffles, giveaways and live sport to keep the celebrations rolling. Have a hit of cricket with the Royal Cricket Club indoor cricket competition starting at 1 pm. When the belly starts rumbling order a $15 Rump Steak along with a $25 Corona Bucket to wash it down.
HQ Presents Zomboy and Delta Heavy – After a day of celebrations keep the party going at HQ where Zomboy and Delta Heavy are set to entertain with local supporting acts in between. Tickets are $34.70.
InterContinental Hotel – What’s more glamorous than spending Australia Day in the Riverside Restaurant indulging on a special menu including Marinated Kangaroo. Or, relax in The Atrium Lounge and enjoy some great Aussie classics like a an Aussie Pie Floater and Lamingtons.

Port Lincoln Tunarama Festival – It’s home to the world Famous Tuna Toss. There’s going to be lots of participation events, arts and cultural displays, local market stalls and some of the freshest seafood in the world. It’s the perfect family fun-filled event if you’re heading down to Port Lincoln.
Semaphore Summer Carnival – Enjoy the carnival atmosphere, relax on the beach and watch the popular fireworks display at 9:30 pm. The seaside fun will include dodgem cars, bungy’s, water balls, tattoos, thrill rides and kiddy rides.
Sense and Sensibility in the Garden – A low key Summers evening in a garden is one way to spend Australia Day as Blue Sky Theatre and Open Gardens SA put on a show. Laugh and cry at the Dashwood sisters’ quest for romance. Bring a picnic and some cash for the bar. Tickets are $35.
SureShaker’s Shake ’N’ Bake Tour – Join the sureshaker fam at the Gov for loads of beats and tunes. You’re advised to strap yourselves in for some finger licking tunes from Boo Seeka, Bootleg Rascal and Lyall Moloney. Get your tickets here.
Survival Day at Tandanya – Head down to Semaphore to not only celebrate but also commemorate the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and acknowledge and strengthen the present and future of the great culture.
