You won’t believe how many Australians have never seen snow!

New research results are out which pit the seasons against each other, as well as desirable holiday destinations and you’ll never guess the results.

Skiing in ThredboIn light of the recent record snowfall – over a metre and a half of snow in the Snowy Mountains in the last week – Thredbo, Australia’s No.1 Ski Resort, has released The National Winter Report which reveals that Australia is a nation of cold temperature lovers, with 3 in 4 (75%) Australians stating they actually like winter.

The Newspoll survey, commissioned by Thredbo, shows that while Australia is known for its sunny climate and summer sports, 1 in 4 (25%) Australians actually prefer the winter season over summer’s scorching temperatures. Surprisingly, when it comes to each state, Queenslanders were shown to be the biggest fans of winter, with 30% recording their preference of winter over summer.

Despite this fondness for the winter season, the research uncovered that 1 in 5 (20%) Australians have never experienced or seen the magic of snow in their lifetime. Further to this, 1 in 2 (49%) younger adults aged 18-24 have never had a snowball fight, and 6 in 10 (60%) young adults have not once made a snowman.

The National Winter Report also found that a large proportion of Australians (60%) have never skied or snowboarded before, and almost half (47%) have never had a snow holiday. Interestingly however, 3 in 4 (74%) are very keen to go on a snow holiday, and 6 in 10 (59%) prefer going on holiday in Australia rather than abroad.

Angus Thomson, Thredbo Director of Brand Development, comments: “The results from The National Winter Report are really interesting. We’ve always known that visitors to Thredbo love winter, but it’s exciting to see that a lot more of the country also like the colder months.

There’s no better way to embrace the winter season than to experience the real thing on a snow holiday. Every day we see the massive smiles on people’s faces when they see snow for the first time or make their first snowman, and this is something we want every Australian to be able to experience.”

In the past week Thredbo has received over one and a half metres of accumulated snowfall, allowing the resort to open the whole mountain from top to bottom just in time for the busy school and family holiday period.

“With the best early season snow conditions at the resort in decades, now is the time to get to Thredbo and check out the resort’s exciting range of winter experiences – there’s really something for everyone,” added Angus Thomson.

This winter snow season, Thredbo has added several new features to its already impressive offering. This includes a brand new snow play area for tobogganing and tubing off the mountain; an increase in the age of kids pricing to everyone 17 and under; and the addition of an all-new terrain park, set to entertain and challenge skiers and boarders across all skill levels.

In celebration of the conditions and the findings from The National Winter Report, Thredbo is offering amazing first timer and family packages. First timers can receive a day of skiing with lessons and rental free when they buy a multi-day first timer pass, and families have the ability to access the amazing ‘kids can stay and ski free’ deals. Conditions apply.
