The Development Assessment Commission (DAC) has given the green light for the redevelopment of new clubrooms for the Norwood Football Club after deferring its decision last month.
City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters Mayor, Robert Bria, said he was pleased and relieved that the decision has come before Christmas, so that the Council and the Norwood Football Club can move into 2017 with a sense of momentum.
“Both the Council and the Club have worked hard on the project and Redlegs supporters have waited a long time for this moment, so we can now focus our energies on the demolition of the Baulderstone Stand in the New Year,” said Mayor Bria.
“There has been a lot of talk about new clubrooms and it’s great that we can now put this talk into action and construct what I believe we be an iconic facility for The Parade and the best in the SANFL.
“I am hopeful that the new clubrooms will be complete in time for the 2018 football season, which will also coincide with the 140th anniversary of the Norwood Football Club,” he said.
Norwood Football Club President, Paul Di Iulio, said he was delighted with the news and was looking forward to the Members’ facility, which will be known as the Wolf Blass Centre, being constructed.
“Norwood has, for far too long, been without its spiritual home and there is no doubt this new facility will serve the Football Club for many years to come and be a great community asset for all to use,” said Mr Di Iulio.
“The Club would like to take this opportunity to thank Wolf Blass for the significant personal contribution he has made to ensure this new facility is built and to also acknowledge the fantastic support which the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters has provided the Norwood Football Club throughout this lengthy process,” he said.
“The Club has acted in good faith by making genuine compromises to address the concerns made by nearby residents during the assessment process, whilst also ensuring the facility will be available for a variety of uses outside of football,” said Mayor Bria.
The new clubrooms will cost an estimated $5.4 million, of which $2 million will be funded by the Council, with the remaining $3.4 million to be funded by the Norwood Football Club.
The Club’s contribution is comprised of $2 million which it will receive from the SANFL for the sale of AAMI Stadium, with the balance coming from the Club’s fundraising efforts.
Mr Di Iulio said the Club has already raised $1.1 million for the redevelopment and has number of other fundraising initiatives planned for 2017.
