World Vasectomy Day Live vasectomy-athon in front of a studio audience

WVD-superhero-website-event-page-300pxEver wondered about a vasectomy but were too afraid to ask? World Vasectomy Day will hit Adelaide on Friday, 18 October, so there’s just over a week until you have the chance to find out all there is to know – and more…

On World Vasectomy Day, 17 men will PUT THEIR BALLS ON THE LINE to save the planet and they’ll do it in front of a live studio audience in association with national science communication organisation: RiAus.

Meet legendary Florida-based vasectomist, Dr Doug Stein, who will perform the vasectomies, while fielding questions from a live Adelaide audience and an international online audience (hosted by RiAus Director, Dr Paul Willis). Dr Stein will be also be joined by Australian ‘brother vasectomist’, Dr Nick Demediuk (aka Dr Snip).

A diverse gathering of thought leaders will participate in all three sessions throughout the day to consider the social, political, cultural and ethical issues raised by World Vasectomy Day and by Dr Stein’s mission to save the planet, one vasectomy at a time…

  • Session One: 1-2:30pm – Nuts and bolts – the techniques of no-scalpel surgery
  • Session Two: 3-4:30pm – To snip or not to snip – the myths, social stigmas and fears associated with vasectomy around the world
  • Session Three: 5:30-7pm – Politics of population – the implications of human sustainability. Can we really cap population growth?

Eminent guests will include best-selling author Prof Paul Ehrlich (The Population Bomb) and other leading voices in the debate on human population.
Men around the world are volunteering to step up to shoulder the responsibility of family planning and dedicate their vasectomies to lifting the burden from their family, community and the planet. The goal is to undertake 1,000 vasectomies across 25 countries.

World Vasectomy Day is the creation of Oscar-nominated and Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Jonathan Stack, who while setting out to tell his own story about getting a vasectomy, met Dr Stein and, together ended up making a film about population on the planet. The Vasectomist is produced by Stack’s New York-based Gabriel Films and Sydney-based Smith&Nasht, founded by Simon Nasht and Dick Smith and will have its World Premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival on 16 October.
