As I sit here typing, I know that I’ve had a really good workout because my legs have seized and I physically cannot lift myself from my chair.

I probably shouldn’t have skipped leg day last week (*cough* for the last few months) before taking a barre class with the Glam team.

Barre. That one little word. So much pain. So much gain.

When we walked into the Inner Strength Barre & Pilates studio in Glenelg for a barre class, I really didn’t know what to expect. I’ve done ballet, and I’ve done pilates, but what even is barre? Touted as the “hottest new celebrity workout spreading the globe”, barre incorporates the precision of pilates with the positions, moves, grace and technique of ballet. Add the alignment of yoga, plus the strength of sports conditioning and BAM. There we have it, a “challenging and exciting workout, which stretches and sculpts the muscles whilst burning fat”.

You can win 5 classes of barre pilates for you and a friend at the bottom of this article!

Our session started off with a squat heavy warm up, moving straight into legs, core, arms, and, lastly, the booty. Different elements of the hour workout used different pieces of equipment: light hand weights, balls, therabands, and, of course, the ballet bar. My lean instructor, Clancy Sullivan, enthusiastically moved through the workout with us with the grace and perfect technique of a prima ballerina. While her friendly guidance and encouragement taught a bunch of embarrassingly inflexible and unfit barre beginners probably the hardest work out of our life, her seemingly effortless execution of the workout provided all the motivation we needed to carry on.

The post work out high and incredible sense of achievement is enough to keep us coming back, let alone the results we’ll see on our bodies after a few weeks worth of classes. That, and the fact that the class is actually mentally stimulating and fun. It’s no wonder celebrities like Madonna, Drew Barrymore, Kelly Osborne and Natalie Portman swear by barre.

Here at Glam, we’d recommend barre to anyone. If you’re a busy person looking for a quick and challenging workout, this is the one. We can’t think of another hour long workout that works the entire body as thoroughly.

As well as their Glenelg studio, Inner Strength Plates & Barre also have studios in Goodwood and Hyde Park.
