WOMADelaide Releases Full 2015 Planet Talks Program

WOMADelaide in partnership with the University of South Australia today released the full schedule of panel discussion topics and workshops for its 2015 Planet Talks program.

Andrew-Denton-BannerWOMADelaide in partnership with the University of South Australia today released the full schedule of panel discussion topics and workshops for its 2015 Planet Talks program. A stimulating collection of six panel sessions and three hands-on workshops dealing with sustainability and the environment.

Led by respected ABC science presenters Robyn Williams and Bernie Hobbs, the 2015 Planet Talks sessions will see 16 speakers from around the world assembled in Botanic Park’s Speakers Corner including US living legend Oceanographer Sylvia Earle, author and international celebrated seed democracy activist Vandana Shiva and renowned US environmental communicator Simran Sethi. The Planet Talks will present two sessions per day on Saturday, Sunday and Monday of the festival weekend and topics will include:

  • The Silver Lining in the Cloud of Climate Change – An optimistic discussion about business, agriculture, science, politics and society’s response to the climate change challenge with Bob BrownPeter Langridgeand Cecilia Woolford
  • Valuing Our Planet- An exploration of the conflicting values we place on ourland, food and water with Vandana ShivaPaul Sutton and Tim Jarvis
  • I’m not a Climate Scientist but … – A satirists guide to communicating climate science and carbon politics with Andrew DentonRod Quantockand Hannah Gadsby.
  • Can Human Beings be Well When the Planet is Sick? – What will the long and short-term effects of climate change mean to human health and wellbeing with Paul WillisEmily Johnstonand Fiona Stanley.
  • Repairing the Blue Heart of our Planet – Exploringthe vast challenge ahead to change and reverse the dire predictions our oceans face with Sylvia EarleCharlie Veron and Bronwyn Gillanders.
  • Creating hope –A conversation between two of the world’s eco-heroes – Sylvia Earle and Simran Sethi – as they discuss their hopes and dreams for the planet.

Focused on furthering the conversation about the state of our environment, WOMADelaide Director, Ian Scobie, said that The Planet Talks is the perfect platform to not only critically discuss issues facing the planet but also to celebrate the ideas, innovations and people that have emerged in response to the challenge.

“In an internet era, forums like the Planet Talks that present effective and enlightening communicators, thinkers, researchers and activists have never been more important,” said Mr Scobie.

“In this light, I’m sure our the 2015 Planet Talks program will inspire and motivate people to engage with and share ideas that make positive changes for the benefit of the planet,”

UniSA Vice Chancellor Professor David Lloyd says UniSA is proud to be presenting the Planet Talks series again this year.

“Through thought-provoking conversation and lively debate, we can work together to uncover and explore new ideas that can make a lasting difference to the health of our environment,” Prof Lloyd says.

 Announced alongside the Planet Talks Sessions today is a daily Planet Talks Workshop – a new addition to the program featuring three hands-on workshops dealing with sustainability around the home.

  • How sustainable is your diet?  –How to make a delicious meal using sustainable and organic produce and wine and why we should think more about our food choices with Simon BryantLouisa Rose and Evangeline Mantzioris.
  • How to Create an Amazing Outdoor Playspace! – How to encourage your kids to spend more time playing outside through creating outdoor nature play spaces. With Sarah Sutterand Sarah Boyd 
  • Eco-homes: Reducing waste, saving water, energy, money and the earth. – Providing innovative energy and water saving tips, ideas and demonstrations to help you start transforming your house into an eco-home with Robert Crockerand Martin Freney
