South Australian made Holden Commodore SV6 has won the ‘Best Large Car Under $70,000’ category, with the Mercedes-Benz C200 recognised as the ‘Judges’ Choice’, in Australia’s Best Car awards.

ABC Chief Judge, and RAA Senior Manager Mobility & Automotive Policy, Mark Borlace said last year’s winner, the locally made VF Commodore, again takes out the large car class, having fought off tough opposition from imported rivals.

“The winning vehicles have performed the best in their respective categories against lots of competition,” said Mr Borlace.

“The volume selling SV6 was rewarded by judges for its affordability, safety, ergonomics, space, and fuel efficiency for a petrol-powered car.

“Along with being crowned the ‘Judges Choice’ for 2014, the Mercedes-Benz C200 is also the winner of the Best Medium Car over $50,000.

“This car performed well in all areas, making it a benchmark vehicle which will influence the direction of its competitors.

“The judges believed it’s likely the car will have a significant impact in its segment and be a potential game-changer.”

The Judges’ Choice award is not necessarily presented to the fastest, the biggest or even the most expensive vehicle – the car has to deliver a desirable package of value for money, safety, innovation, and drivability. It has to be the best of the best.

“These awards aim to influence the new car market by challenging brands to continually lift their game in terms of safety, performance and affordability standards,” said Mr Borlace.

“The judges have a very difficult task of narrowing down the 45 finalists to 15 winners but these awards will help motorists filter through the huge amount of choice that faces them when it comes to buying a new car.”

Changes to the Australia’s Best Cars program in 2014 include:

  • A new category of Micro Cars to recognise their growing popularity
  • A change from People Movers to Family Wagons
  • A revamp of the SUV and 4WD categories to reflect the changes in the marketplace

“The introduction of the micro cars category and a change to small SUVs has not only recognised the change in the market place but addresses affordability issues by looking at cars that are smaller and more cost effective in fuel, servicing and size.”
