Watching Bowden Grow From Jarmer’s Kitchen

Having watched the rapid change of the Bowden area of the last 2 years, Jarmer’s Kitchen owners Chris and Linda are looking forward to their own growth to mirror that of the suburb.

Having celebrated the second birthday of Jarmer’s Kitchen at the end of May, Chris and Linda Jarmer have found the growing suburb of Bowden to be warm and welcoming. “We were told that it was going to take 5-6 years to build up the business here, but it’s happened a lot faster”, Linda says. “We were really welcomed into the space and into the community.”

Just as the community has made the Jarmer’s Kitchen feel right at home, Linda and Chris are passionate about doing the same for the community. Their plans for the years to come are as varied and exciting as the developments taking place in the “007” postcode and they all revolve around building a social hub for the residents and their visitors.

With Life More Interesting moving out, the area that is currently the information and sales centre is set to become a new bar and function space in the new year. Catering for up to 200 people, Chris and Linda are looking to create a space that will be perfect for weddings, christenings, corporate events and any other functions that may tickle their patrons’ fancies. The bar will reflect the welcoming and communal design of the Bowden development and will be open during the day, acting as a social hub for the community. “We want our bar to be like the local pub: social, friendly and easy-going, a place to gather”, Linda explains. There will be tapas on offer and the family-friendly feel of their restaurant will flow through to this new space.

It’s important to Linda and Chris that children and families are welcome at their venue. “We have two young children and we love to dine out with them, but we don’t like taking them to ‘kiddy’ places”, Linda says. “When we go out we want really good meals made with fresh, local ingredients, in a space that isn’t intimidating. That’s what we aim to offer here.”

Whilst it’s certainly their main focus for 2017, the new bar and function space isn’t all the Jarmer’s have planned. In a few years they want to start looking at the space they have upstairs. Initial thoughts include using the upstairs area for offices, providing Jarmer’s Kitchen with more dining space, or even offering B&B style accommodation. In the opposite direction, they also have a cellar begging to be turned into a something suave, but what that is as yet they’re not sure.

Wine-downers, buskers, pop-up cellar doors and live music on the street are all a part of their plans, as are welcoming the locals to think of their private dining space as their own. “We know many of the apartments around here have smaller living spaces, not designed for dinner parties”, Linda says. “We want the community to know that our private dining space is available for this very reason; somewhere local you can come to if you want more people over than your place can fit. It’s your home away from home.”

With Plant 4 about to open, the Market Shed moving in and rumours of a brewery, Linda and Chris are eagerly looking forward to the growth of the community around them. “It’s an exciting place and we really love being a part of it”, says Chris.

Open seven days for breakfast and lunch and with a dinner service available Tuesday through Saturday, Jarmer’s Kitchen (18 Park Terrace, Bowden) have also partnered with Mlkman and the soon-to-arrive Uber Eats service so that you can have their tasty meals delivered to your door.
