From perfecting BMX skills to getting in touch with nature, there is plenty for young people and families to do in the City this winter school holidays, kicking off on Saturday 4 July.
Lord Mayor Martin Haese said Adelaide is a veritable playground and there is plenty to see and do for kids and families all year round, but especially during the July school holidays.
“Our glorious Park Lands are full of things to do for little or no cost, where kids and families can learn and be with nature or try new activities to develop their creativity through play,” said Martin.
Adelaide City Council’s recently released winter edition of ’20 Ways with Nature Play’ eBook has 20 activities families can try in the Park Lands including Nature Bingo. Scattered throughout the Park Lands and Squares is a selection of play spaces including a giant chess set and table tennis table in Whitmore Square, a 25m flying fox and giant mouse wheel in Bonython Park as well as a host of nature play activities.
The Park Lands are also home to an array of sporting areas such as the Kurrangga BMX tracks, 3-on-3 basketball courts, tennis courts, golf links and the Adelaide Aquatic Centre. “Adelaide City Council has partnered with Little Black Bike, City Dirt Crew and Lighthouse Youth Projects to bring back BMX Holiday Sessions which was very popular with young people last school holidays.
“We have teamed up with Music SA to run a three day program for young people passionate about music production, which will take them through the ins and outs of writing a song to creating their own music video,” he said.
Highlights of what’s in store over the s July school holidays include:
BMX Holiday Sessions –Wednesday 8 July (Ages 6 – 10) and Wednesday 15 July (11 – 15), with beginners from 10am – 12pm and advanced 1pm – 3pm, Kurrangga Park BMX Track, Unley Road. BBQ lunch and snacks provided (cost $15) www.adelaidecitycouncil.com/whats-on/event/winter-bmx-holiday-sessions.
