The Media Resource Centre (MRC) is delighted to announce the winners of their Tropfest Production Initiative for 2012. The initiative aims to assist South Australian filmmakers develop and produce an engaging, entertaining short specifically for entry into the 2012 Movie Extra Tropfest film festival. Winners receive a $15,000 cash investment, including $5,000 in-kind equipment/facilities hire, to support the production of their short films.
The initiative has been expanded to support three films for 2012. They are: A Tortured Mind; Suburban Samurai and Clarence’s Kite.
MRC Committee Chair and Program Manager Shane McNeil said “We were impressed by the wealth of South Australian filmmaking talent. We are proud to support the winning entries and excited to see the production of these funny, clever and original films.”
Comedy short A Tortured Mind is the story of a romantic inventor who can see the future and longs for a past when boy always got the girl. The team behind the film, writer and director Dave Wade and producer Bettina Hamilton, were nominated for Best Short Film at the 2011 Sydney Film Festival and for an inaugural Australian Academy award for their last short film Cropped.
Comedy Suburban Samurai, looks at a modern-day Samurai who finds himself torn between the code of the Bushido and his own postcode. It is the latest project from writer and director Craig Behenn and producers David Ngo and Nick Matthews. The team’s films Death of a Bogan (2010) and Justice is Served (2011) were Tropfest finalists in previous years.
Animated comedy Clarence’s Kite, an uplifting story about a boy and his kite and the tree that comes between them, by Thomas Cant, will receive post-production support and mentoring. Cant is final year student at the SA Australian Film and Television Radio School Graduate Course in 3D animation and is making Clarence's Kite with his classmates.
The winning filmmaking teams are currently in pre-production with production due to start in November. The production initiative has supported previous Tropfest finalists and award-winning films including Caught in a Loop, Jackie’s Spring Palace, Baboons and last year’s finalist Sumo Lake.
Tropfest is Australia’s most prestigious short film festival and one of the largest short film festivals in the world.
The MRC and the City of Holdfast Bay will present the SA screening of Tropfest at the Bay
on Sunday 19th of February 2012. This is a FREE event.
