It is with sadness that we pay tribute to Richard Jones, 65, leading South Australian businessman and founder of the RD Jones Group who suffered a heart attack on Sunday 3 July while on a cycling holiday in France with his wife Denise.
Many South Australians would be familiar with the hotels under the banner of the RD Jones Group, including the Gully Public Bar, The Moseley Bar and Kitchen, Bridgeway Hotel, The Holdy, Settlers Hotel and Colonnades Tavern to name a few.
Mr Jones began his career in the police force in the late 1960s where he rose to the rank of detective. He established the RD Jones Group with his wife Denise in 1982 with the purchase of their first hotel, The Grosvenor Hotel at Victor Harbor. The RD Jones Group has since become one of South Australia’s largest and most respected hospitality businesses. It owns 17 hotels in South Australia and Queensland. Mr Jones was also Chairman of Thirsty Camel SA. He was also a strong community supporter who donated to a variety of charities and community groups.
Mr Jones’ daughter, Danielle Donaldson, speaking on behalf of the family said: “This is unexpected, extremely sad and upsetting for all of us. Richard was a wonderful father, grandfather and husband. He was a true character and a remarkable man who achieved a great deal in building a business that has provided a foundation for our hundreds of employees and, in turn, support for their families.”
“We are all feeling a great sense of loss and we are still coming to terms with his death.”
Mr Jones is survived by his wife Denise, his adult children Ryan and Danielle, his son-in-law Luke, daughter-in-law Claire and their families.
