When I heard that the ‘2016 Best Breakfast in Canberra’ was located only down the road from where I was staying on my trip to the ACT, it was a no-brainer. I had to check it out. If the Trip Advisor reviews were anything to go by, I was in for a treat.
Located in a suburban shopping centre, Ricardo’s strikes me as the sort of place my school mum friends would gather for coffees once we’d dropped off the kids. From the research I’ve done, it’s evident that it also attracts its fair share of foodies, and it’s little wonder why.
When you walk through the doors, you’re greeted with a dessert cabinet that rivals Muriati Cakes in Adelaide. It’s colourful and amazing and I want ONE OF EVERYTHING, and a flat white please.
This place is known for its patisserie (along with its famous all-day breakfast of course) and it’s little wonder why. They even have a Black Forest Bomb – which has a sparkler wick, and you can light it. IT’S AMAZING.
There’s also a Snickers Gaytime cake – which unsurprisingly, looks like a Golden Gaytime. The presentation of everything at Ricardo’s is pretty spectacular.
For breakfast we decided to opt for some Instagrammable dishes – the waffles and the pancakes. Definitely not things to consider if you’re wanting to keep your calorie count down. But hey, if you’re in it for the flavour, and you have a sweet tooth – this place is for you!
When the dishes were delivered to our table, we knew we’d hit an Instagram jackpot. Breakfast at Ricardo’s is a colourful dream.
The banana & pandan waffle was served with with raspberry & pandan gel, berry ice cream, oat crumble & smoked maple syrup. It was truly indulgent and not too sweet, but definitely a dish bordering on a dessert rather than a traditional savoury breakfast. I loved it.
The apple pancakes were served with yoghurt mascarpone, berry compote, watermelon, shattered baklava, honey nut crumble & green apple maple syrup. Too much for one person in my opinion but that’s possibly because it was my third breakfast and the amount of sweet, sugary food was slowing me down. Another delicious treat to start the day.
For those wanting more traditional meals, there’s still things on their all-day breakfast menu like their big breakfast, their smoked salmon breakfast, breakfast fritters and green eggs and ham benedict. For lunch there’s a large array of crowd favourites including burgers, gourmet sandwiches, salads, fish & chips and calamari. There’s also a vegan menu and a pretty extensive kids menu. Ricardo’s is certainly pitched as a family-friendly venue.
If I ever find another notch to loosen my belt, I’ll be going back to try some of the other meals, because if the sweet dishes were anything to go by, there’s still plenty of breakfast items calling my name.
