Tour Down Under 2017 To Start On King William Rd

Stage 1 of Australia’s premiere cycling event will move across the CBD for 2017 with King William Road to replace Prospect as the starting point of the lycra brigade.

The prestige which seems to accompany throngs of lycra clad cyclists a European taste, Adelaide has certainly garnered an appreciation for in recent years and the 2017 Tour Down Under will take on an additional element of sophistication when it begins on Tuesday, January 17.

The City Of Unley have won the bid to host the Hostworks Stage 1 Start of the 2017 Santos TDU, with the peleton to enjoy the quaint brickwork on King William Rd from Opey Ave as they prepare for the ride to the Barossa to complete the stage.

Of course, the community have always shown outstanding support for the race which is why Mike Turtur, Race Director, Santos Tour Down Under was thrilled to be returning to Unley to kick things off. Those who watch the race closely will note that this means that the peleton will be travelling in the opposite direction to previous years, with the riders to head through the heart of the city as they begin their journey North.

Unley Mayor Lachlan Clyne said the Council was honoured to be chosen to host the race’s official start, which was likely to attract tens of thousands of eager spectators to the area. “We’ve proudly hosted stages of the Santos Tour Down Under since 1999 but this is the first time we’ve secured the Hostworks Stage 1 Start. Being involved in this incredible sporting event is truly exciting for our community and gives us a chance to celebrate our vibrant cycling culture and showcase everything our City has to offer,” Mr Clyne said.

In keeping with tradition, the City of Unley will also host its popular street party – the Unley Gourmet Gala – along King William Rd on the eve of the Hostworks Stage 1 start. Celebrating its seventeenth year in 2017, the Unley Gourmet Gala is the longest running event held in conjunction with the Tour Down Under.

“Last year the Gala attracted more than 30,000 people and we hope to build on that in 2017. This year event goers can expect their favourite event attractions along with some new and exciting twists,” Mr Clyne said.

The 2017 Santos Tour Down Under will be held from Saturday, January 14, until Sunday, January 22. For all the details, visit www.tourdownunder.com.au.
