School holidays bring forth a plethora of shows for the littlies, but teenagers seldom get a look in. Teen Dream has everything a teenage girl wants – a Boy Band!

Christian, Aidan, Jordan, Andrew and Sean (Christian Bartlett, Aidan Jackson-Drewett, Jordan Tomlijenovic, Andrew Freeborn and Sean Jackson) start busking to make a little bit of spending money (their first fifty dollars going on pizza). They are ‘discovered’ by a talent scout who, in actuality, is a sleazy con artist. After being duped out of a hard earned $2,500, the boys take their remaining $500 and enter a reputable talent school to be groomed into the latest Boy Band (a thinly veiled advert for the Mighty Good Talent Schools, perhaps?). After this, they enter a television talent contest, Teen Dream, and five new stars are born.

Malcolm Harslett’s plotline is cheesy and the dialogue on the banal side – but no more than any Disney High School Musical or Camp Rock movie. The show is about the ‘boys’, so who cares?

The five lads are what Teen Dream is about, and more importantly, they are what make the production work. Tomlijenovic, in particular, just shines. His expertise with Kelly Wilson’s One Direction style choreography, his persona of sheer enjoyment, confidence and singing voice make one certain that he was born to be a Boy Bander.

The oldest of the group, 18 year old Bartlett, also has a naturalness about his performance that makes one follow his every move on stage.. Make no mistake though; the other three guys are worth their weight in boy-band glitter and pizzazz.

Wilson and other adult, Mitre Kammash help the proceedings along, with Kammash being quite the comedian in a few well wigged supporting roles.

Teen Dream is just good fun fairy floss for the masses. There’s only ‘one direction’ for these boys to go – and that is up!
