The Switch Is Turned On As Rundle Mall Lights Up

Rundle Mall lights up as the new floating lights are switched on…

Rundle Mall just got a whole lot better looking. The Mall’s $30 million upgrade has been completed, with the floating lights being switched on for the first time last night.

The catenary lighting system was flicked on, illuminating the city’s premier retail strip. The final part of the upgrade just adds to the Mall’s amazing new look that has given the shopping precinct a fresh new energy which has encouraged more South Australians and visitors to spend time in the precinct.

Deputy Lord Mayor Houssam Abiad said that it was exciting to see the Rundle Mall project completed.

“We have seen more than half a billion dollars in private investment in the Mall since the commencement of the Rundle Mall Masterplan, including new international and local retailers as well as improvements by existing retailers and exciting changes in connecting laneways.

“The lighting is the finishing touch, bringing ambience and atmosphere to the Mall as well as providing increased levels of lighting for safety and visibility, attracting more people day and night.

“And coming soon will be some pretty special Christmas lighting so watch this space!”

Tom McCready, Executive Program Manager Public Realm said that all work had gone according to plan.

“Testing commenced on 29 September and we are delighted with the level of lighting provided.

“The lights are energy efficient long-life LEDs. In addition, directional lighting from the spires will illuminate the entrances of feature and heritage buildings at the eastern and western ends of the Mall.

“The system has been fully engineered, taking into account the integrity of the buildings and lighting has been evenly spread along the full length of the Mall.

So next time you are in Rundle Mall make sure you look up!
