Inside the Father’s Day Red Vino Pack

Wynns ‘The Siding’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 (RRP: $25)

If you’re like me, hearing the words “Classic Coonawarra Cabernet” will make your heart stop. There is nothing in this world more satisfying than an honest Cabernet that possesses classic notes of mulberry, blackberry, mint and hints of cedar. It’s got body, it’s got depth and that colour.. don’t even get me started on that sultry inky colour… This red is a notch above the rest, and that means something, considering Wynns sets the benchmark for Australian Cabernet.

Seabrook ‘The Merchant’ Shiraz 2009 (RRP: $35)

If you’re a breeder (of animals – don’t be rude) you’ll understand that pedigree is a huge deal and interestingly enough, the same is said for wine. So with six consecutive vintages scoring 94 points and above, Mofos and Mofettes, allow us to introduce our latest purebred Shiraz.

A plush and luxurious example of its region, the skill of the winemaker Hamish Seabrook and the quality of the 2009 vintage, this bold and hearty red is rich with black fruits, pepper, nutmeg and cinnamon. To be honest, between the lengthy and expressive palate, the very fine yet firm tannins and the overwhelming deliciousness of this wine, you’re going to have trouble deciding whether to drink the whole case now or cellar it for the next 10 years. Be strong, Mofos – hopefully your case will last longer than ours.

Willunga 100 Cabernet Shiraz 2010 (RRP: $25)

There are few greater moments in life than discovering a tasty mid-priced wine, something that explodes with dark berry and plum flavours before settling into a lovely lingering spicy, earthy wine. Matthew Jukes quoted “If only life was as joyous and worry free as Willunga 100…”, while Tim Atkin said “This is the sort of wine that made Australia famous.”

Tomich Hill ‘Family Reserve’ Syrah 2009 (RRP: $50)

This one’s more of a Rhone-style Shiraz (sorry, Syrah!), with earthy blueberries, cherries, blackberries and the wondefully varietal black plum underneath all that. With fine poise and deliciously dry tannins, it’s in a perfect spot right now, and needs no further ado. Get into it!

Haselgrove ‘Switch’ GSM 2013 (RRP: $25)

From Halliday’s 2015 Dark Horse Winery of the Year comes one appropriately dark, rich and juicy Mclaren vale GSM – a now-iconic regional blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro. Just putting it out there: you’ll want to be quick to get your allocation.

WayWood Tempranillo 2011 (RRP: $30)

Whether you have a date for lunch or not, you should be taking this wine with you too. With silky, juicy tannins and cherry flavours in excess, and a dry but not drying finish, this is one savoury red you’ll want to take for a ride on your bicycle built for two…
