The Highway A Hit For Mushroom Month

Returning for it’s sixth year, The Highway Hotel just keep finding new ways to reinvent the Mushroom for their July showcase menu. This year is a cracker!

The Highway might seem an unlikely culinary bastion on Anzac Highway, perhaps better known for marking the midway point between the City and Glenelg (at least, it seemed that way during our last City to Bay). However, in revealing their latest Mushroom Month menu to Glam Adelaide, the sixth year in a row they’re returned to the faithful fungi, we reacquainted ourselves with the incredible innovations of their kitchen, incorporating traditional, classic combinations and some new twists on mushroom favourites for the real foodies.

Truffled Duxelles Ravioli

We will admit, we always approach a complete mushroom menu with little skepticism to begin with. However, the combinations on offer, exquisite and unlikely, are a true first an utterly delicious paired together, (sorry Mum, mushroom gravy on mushrooms doesn’t cut it!). The chefs wouldn’t reveal much about how they came up with these innovative meals, but that sense of mystery simply adds to the experience.    Each offering on the menu uniquely incorporates mushrooms, but it never overpowers the flavour of the dishes. Entrée options are between the Swiss Brown & Courgette Roulade and Truffled Duxelles Ravioli. The Roulade is perfectly paired with the pickled pearl onions for a little zest, while the Ravioli (our personal favourite) is extremely light and subtle for a pasta dish. Larger meals to satisfy consist of the Eye Fillet & Pickled Brown and the earthy Forest Mushroom Gnocchi. The Gnocchi is as any good gnocchi should be, like light fluffy pillows with a perfectly crisped outer, dressed in a remarkably creamy sauce and a variety of mushrooms that create diferent flavours and textures with each bite.

Enchanted Mushroom Garden

The mushroom didn’t stop there either. For dessert the Enchanted Mushroom Garden presents fireworks of flavours for your mouth, a bit like what Skittles always promise but never really come through with. Sweet is ok with mushroom if each is treated respectfully, and this truly enchanting dish is all about discovering something new.

Whether your ideal winter menu consists of a steak and red wine, a creamy pasta, or an indulgent dessert, this menu has you covered. In addition to the flavours, we were reminded that The Highway is actually an incredibly cosy pub environment. What a retreat from this icy winter weather!

You know, if mushrooms aren’t your thing, you can always still get a Parmi. Whatever you do, head along to 290 Anzac Hwy, Plympton during July.
