Established in 1851, the core theme of eclectic, artistic and charismatic hotel “The Colonist” is ‘local’, stemming through all offers that tantalise, excite and entertain guests.
The Colonist, located on the Parade in Norwood, had a facelift 7 years ago, with the building stripped back to its raw beauty with high ceilings, ornate copper roofing and original scenic wallpaper. A key focus was on enhancing the artistic vibe, with new installations placed in each of the spaces to enrich visual appeal, with a feature frozen ice chandelier produced by renowned local artist Nick Folland.
The City of Norwood is known for its unique and diverse culture and for valuing creativity and artistic expression. Alison Davis, Venue Manager, explains how the Colonist embraces this mantra by supporting emerging and established visual artists. ‘We have a tradition of being involved with South Australian Living Artist festival annually, celebrating and showcasing a fellow South Australian. We extend this outside of Visual Arts Month at varying times through the year, showcasing individual artists in solo exhibitions. The venue has a loyal following in the community and we aim to ensure we have new and alternative offerings for our guests like live acoustic and solo entertainment weekly and in venue art exhibitions by people local to our community, plus an ever changing specials menu showcasing local produce,’ she says.
The Colonists ever evolving and changing offerings support local producers like microbreweries from the Adelaide Hills, and has been a supporter of the Adelaide Hills Cider Company from their beginnings. Small wineries are a constant on the wine list including Jericho and Longview, also from the Adelaide Hills.
The latest solo exhibition to the venue features unique, contemporary abstract and portrait pieces by Theophilis Amanatidis. He migrated from Northern Greece in 1983 to Adelaide, and fell in step with the surrounds and lifestyle of Norwood, finding inspiration from his surroundings for his art work.
The artwork will be on display and available for sale through June. An opening was held on Thursday, June 4th with thanks to support from sponsors 42 Degrees, Yangarra & Rieslingfreak with nibbles put on for guests by the passionate Colonist chefs, led by Dean Lennerth.
The Colonist is open from 12pm during the week and has breakfast from 9am Saturdays and Sundays. Live music weekly Thursdays from 8pm.
