Around 48 great thinkers will come together at the 2016 Adelaide Festival of Ideas, for a series of thought provoking presentations, in-conversations and special events which will address a rich combination of blue-sky thinking and the urgent issues of our times.
Over two days and three evenings from 21-23 October the festival will bring together thought provoking speakers from around Australia and the world and mix them in exciting ways: scientists of all kinds, policy wonks, philosophers, social and environmental activists, journalists, former politicians, historians, architects, economists, educationalists, theologians and diverse futurists. The Adelaide Festival of Ideas speakers include Australian philosopher and award-winning writer Raimond Gaita, Poet and Screenwriter Nick Drake, SA based writer, performer and producer Manal Younis, prominent thought leader in the fields of social cognitive neuroscience (SCN) Dr Fiona Kerr, and human connectivity, author and CEO of the Sydney Community Foundation Jane Jose and Ellie Rennie.
This follows on from the recently announced Erin Brockovich (pictured), Festival Dedicatee Phillip Adams AO, former US Ambassador to Australia, Jeffrey Bleich, Jose Ramos who will deliver the inaugural University of South Australia Enterprise Oration, leading innovator, inventor and commentator Mark Pesce, Dame former federal minister, Barry Jones Roma Mitchell Oration Robyn Layton QC and polymath and AC who will deliver the 2016 Don Dunstan Oration.
Festival Founder and Chairman Greg Mackie says, “this year’s festival theme is ‘Make or Break: doing nothing is not an option’. We look forward to making news and breaking records as citizens flock in their thousands to enjoy this major expression of civil society – a politician-free zone.” “Of course, we hope that our elected representatives will join us – but as audience members and not as grand-standers. The 2016 Adelaide Festival of Ideas is a tonic for the worst of our spindriven, sound bite culture,” continued Mackie.
