From the welcoming light of Ladybeads Gallery, curator Kat Coppock invites you into the dark to face a macabre manifesto of monsters and mirth.
Twenty-two artists, ranging from established to emerging talents were invited to interpret the theme of monsters. The result is an eclectic exhibition that is presented in the dark for added delight.
By torchlight, you explore each piece beginning with Gemma Killen’s five digital photographs of women embracing their inner demon before moving through an assortment of sculptures, paintings, crocheted dolls and fabrics that culminate in Tiffany Hampton’s startling “Pride and Vanity”, a wooden sculpture with peacock feathers, glitter and rhinestones (pictured).
Other artists include Alphamanta, Ali Harmony Brown, Alyshia Emming, Amy Isabel-Doherty, Agota Sjostrom, Caitlin Millard, Casey Farrell, Genevieve Brandenburg, Haneen Martin, Imee Luz, Jess King, Josh Smith, Lindsey Bryant, NicBic, Nickas Serpantius, Sam Althuizen, Sarah Kellett, Shane Haddy, Shaylee Leach, Wes Todd and curator Kat Coppock.
There’s a lot of ghoulish delight to be found in these 29 works, and the inspired use of torchlight invites the observer to move in close; to examine the fine detail and, as a consequence, be consumed by the disturbing nightmares that fill one’s vision in the gloom and dancing shadows.
