TAFE SA Alumni Cocktail Party and Fashion Parade

By Alexandra Ireland

TAFE SA kicked off the first of their three major events last night for the 2011 Adelaide Fashion Festival.

Held at Prince Alfred College, the TAFE SA Alumni Parade and Cocktail Party was a great showcase of previous students and lecturing staff in fashion design featuring Lucy Tucker of Sainte Lucie, Brenton Drechsler of Ruby Mars, Anna Williamson of Mai Loui, Cristina Tridente of couture+love+madness, Sanela Tettis of Red Pearl Couture and lecturing staff Scott Bowring, Merrin Cameron and Jill Culbertson.

As guests mingled with the fashionable crowd, sipped on Wicks wines and feasted on cocktail food, we were greeted by characters from the RMS Titanic and the Titanic‐inspired costumes created by the Diploma of Costume for Performance students who opened the show.

The fashions on show were a great mixture of classic silhouettes and sophisticated lines giving a real power woman feel, as well as some feminine looks with interesting design features and fabrics.

Festival coordinator Cristina Tridente showed us all how to push the boundaries with her eveningwear collection of couture dresses made from materials such as air con insulation, strands of wool, polystyrene foam pieces and what looked to be a plastic shower curtain!

The Mai Loui collection was a great stand out for me. Uniquely draped pieces flattered the girls floating down the runway, and the muted colour palette really complimented the sophisticated designs. The mixture of fashions on show made for a great parade full of diversity leaving me guessing what would come next.

It’s great to see the talent that has evolved from TAFE SA’s fashion program in past students and current lecturers working for their own labels or leading fashion brands locally, and nationally.
