Review: Summadayze 2012

Despite being an absolute scorcher of a day, the first Summadayze held on New Year's Eve in Adelaide was a massive success.

If you were in Adelaide this New Year's, chances are you were at Summadayze dancing along to acts like Sneaky Sound System, Busy P, Pendulum, Justice, Moby, Grandmaster Flash, Bliss N Eso and of course rap icon The Doggfather himself, Snoop Dogg!

Seasoned performer Snoop Dogg showed the crowd why he is one of the most successful artists of all time and was the standout act of the day.

Snoop, who generally collaborates with other artists on most of his tracks, managed to play an amazing set without any other artists supporting him.

He even managed to crack a few jokes about his ban from Australia in 2007 and promised the huge crowd he would be back in Australia soon.

While there were many other great acts, nothing could quite match the excitement and the hype for Snoop who was on in the early afternoon before heading to Sydney to perform at A Shore Thing at Bondi Beach.

It's understandably hard for local festivals to compete with huge New Year's Festivals such as Falls Festival and Pyramid Rock and unfortunately Adelaide's Summadayze was passed over by Calvin Harris and the Scissor Sisters this year.

However, the line-up was still amazing and the sheer number of people crammed into Rymill Park was intense. It was definitely one of the best places to spend NYE in South Australia.

Summadayze also featured many local DJs, including Loot & Plunder and Leah Mencel who managed to draw strong crowds and not look out of place amongst some of the biggest names in music.

One of my personal highlights was 54 year old Grandmaster Flash who played at 10:30pm, and managed to get even the most exhausted festival go-ers excited for midnight after a long day in the sun.

I decided to bring in the New Year with Aussie hip-hop artists Bliss n Eso instead of French electronic music duo Justice. Mainly because it was a change up from a day mostly filled with DJs and drum and bass.

Bliss n Eso lead the crowd in the NYE count down in typical hip-hop style before the sky lit up with fireworks that could be seen from all over the city.

If you weren't at Summadayze this New Year's Eve in Adelaide, you missed out on an awesome day! But there's always next year and I'll be excited to see who they will get to top the amazing Snoop Dogg!
