The Alliance Française d’Adelaide claims South Australians should rethink their choice when studying a foreign language. Recent studies by Natixis, a well-known international investment bank, suggested that by 2050 over 750 million people will be speaking French, turning it into the most-spoken language in the world, ahead of English and even Mandarin.

French is definitely on the rise and currently the fastest growing language in the world. It is the official language in over 30 countries and is spoken by over 223 million people worldwide.

Of any language, French in particular is very popular in South Australia.

“You would think this is because South Australia is very similar to France with its tradition of great wines and gastronomy culture but the reasons are truly diverse: work, travel, studies. Even frequent travellers come to us to quickly improve or learn the French basics before going on holidays,” says Jean-Christophe Trentinella, Director of the Alliance Française d’Adelaide.

“We have recently seen a significant rise in the number of children attending French classes. Parents want their children to learn another language and French is usually part of it, as they believe it is not only one of the most beautiful languages in the world but it is also a worthwhile investment in their future career. Even business people have noticed that knowing some French opens a lot of new doors for them,” concludes Mr Trentinella.
