The fabulous State Opera of South Australia’s 2015 For the Love… season launched in the beautiful Mortlock Chamber, with enticing performances by Adelaide’s operatic stars, as Timothy Sexton, SOSA CEO and Artistic Director revealed the exciting program.
SOSA will be keeping some pretty interesting company next year… and you’re invited. Spend some time with rakes, murderers, brigands, seducers, liars, lovers, fighters and yep, the Devil… and not just in your commute to the shows.
David Barnard, Head of Music accompanied the whistle-whetters, which started with Là ci darem la mano performed by Joshua Rowe as Don Giovanni and Desiree Frahn as Zerlina. The duet promised Mozart’s Don Giovanni will charm the pants off the audience (if the libertine has anything to do with it) with four shows in May.
Jeremy Tatchell as Valentin performed an impassioned Avant de quitter ces lieux from French opera, Faust by Charles-François Gounod, which promises to heat up your August. Based on the Royal’s Opera House’s Covent Garden production, the gargantuan show will be constructed here, and feature Teddy Tahu Rhodes as Méphistophélès, James Egglestone as Faust, and Kate Ladner as Marguerite, who will be joined by (just shy of) a cast of thousands with the State Opera Chorus, a full ballet troupe and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Do not miss this!
Proving funerals don’t need to be sad, SOSA will inspire with Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem. One hundred minutes of almighty spine tingling awe are promised, with the State Opera Chorus, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Teresa La Rocca, Elizabeth Campbell, Diego Torre and Douglas McNicol for two performances only. Sexton informed that the best seat in the house for this piece is the conductors, so here’s hoping that SOSA might offer conductor-adjacent seats in the pit (chef’s table style); now that would be a once-in-a-lifetime-experience!
Bartók, Wolf-Ferrari, more Mozart and Offenbach feature in the smaller works scheduled, and Masterclasses, “pop-up opera”, new membership groups, pre-performance talks, and school engagements are planned as initiatives to engage audiences. As expected, the most economical way to see the shows next year is to subscribe, and it’s cheaper if you’re under 36.
